Galeria is the leading department store chain in Germany, offering a wide range of products including fashion, beauty, home goods, electronics, and grocery. Founded in 1879, Galeria has been a culturally-significant leader in the German retail industry for nearly 150 years. Over the years, Galeria has evolved through various mergers and rebranding efforts, most notably combining with its largest competitor (Kaufhof) in 2018 to become Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof. Today, Galeria is known for providing a blend of high-end and everyday products, catering to a diverse customer base. Galeria's stores are strategically located in major cities and towns across Germany, making the chain a central part of the country's retail landscape.
The Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) first acquired Galeria in 2015 and subsequently merged the company with Kaufhof in 2018. In June of 2019, HBC fully exited its investment in Galeria by selling its stake to Signa, who had been the partner in the former merger. At the beginning of 2024, Galeria filed for insolvency following the collapse of its parent Signa. NRDC Equity Partners partnered with the family office (BB Kapital) of German businessman Bernd Beetz, former head of cosmetics company Coty and the former supervisory board chairman at Galeria, to acquire Galeria out of insolvency.
